What Exactly are you Putting in my Lips? Facial Fillers Explained (Part 2)

In the second of her short series “Facial Fillers Explained”, Dr Stephanie Laing gives us the low down on the ingredients of facial fillers.

Here at City Health Clinic, I use “HA-based” or hyaluronic acid-based products from the Teosyal range. I have chosen Teosyal for our lip and facial filler treatments because they have been clinically proven for over twenty years, they have a great safety record and produce an excellent result. Natural hyaluronic acid (HA) is produced daily in our bodies. Teosyal formulates a very similar product which is a non-animal-based HA and is temporary. HA is the body’s natural moisturiser. It loves water so will draw it in and that’s why it’s important that we keep our bodies hydrated by drinking plenty of water. So, how does it actually work? Once injected into your lips or skin, the synthetic HA molecules fill up like sponges and it’s this effect which helps to plump up our skin. This mimics what happens with natural HA. When we’re younger, we make lots of HA naturally. As we age, however, we don’t make as much and so skin becomes less voluptuous. There is one key difference between natural HA and synthetic HA. The clever scientists at Teosyal manufacture their products in such a way that the effect of synthetic HA lasts longer when implanted into the face than is the case for natural hyaluronic acid. This means that when we use Teosyal products to augment the lips, recover lost volume through ageing or reshape any asymmetries between the upper and lower lips, we can expect the results to last between 6 and 12 months. And what happens after that? Over time your body will simply metabolise the Teosyal, making it a safe and effective solution for lip enhancement. You can add to and maintain your new look simply by returning to the clinic to see me or one of my colleagues for regular appointments.

Next time, Stephanie will explain more about facial fillers in her blog post "do lip fillers hurt?". In the meantime, if you'd like to book in for a free consultation, please visit our booking page.
